What do wildebeest and travel media have in common? They both have great annual migrations. The travel one took place this week, with 400+ writers, editors, PRs and more descending en masse on Sydney for the @travmedia Summit and International Media Marketplace (IMM). Yesterday was the Summit — held in the so-Frenchy-so-chic surrounds of @sofitelsydney. We followed that up today with IMM at the ICC. As always, it was THE event to discuss all things travel, as well as catch up with friends I only get to see once a year. Now, it’s time to write. Did you know there’s a three-day winter festival celebrating a cryogenically frozen man? It’s called ‘Frozen Dead Guy Days’ and transforms the town of Estes Park in Colorado into a quirky (if slightly morbid) escape featuring coffin races, live music and a polar plunge. Weird, but also kind of amazing. That’s one of many fun facts revealed at today’s @astw_inc lunch sponsored by @visitcolorado and @delta. Held at The Eveleigh by The Grounds, the lunch was a cheat sheet for the best of Colorado, from downtown Denver to Aspen Snowmass, Steamboat, Vail and more. It was great to hear all about the state’s 150th birthday this year, and also catch up with friends in town for @travmedia’s IMM. Country halls have long been the heart of rural communities. Last night I joined friends @cagladstone and @heatherjet at the monthly South Gundurimba Hall dance — around 10 minutes south of Lismore, NSW — for a beautiful reminder of how vital these halls are for human connection, health and happiness. I was the youngest in attendance, but was welcomed with open arms, with people only too happy to strike up a chat. The joy, romance and wholesomeness of it all was infectious, and it’s so heart-warming to see this local tradition continue. I’ve recently become a gym goer. This is not the launch of my gym selfie era. Far from it. Instead, it’s a question why hotel gyms are typically so bad? Most I’ve encountered are rubbish — a treadmill and sad kettle bell in the corner, a gym does not make. @moxysydneyairport is different. It has the best hotel setup I’ve found so far. Enjoying a scenic trek to Huai To Waterfall in Thailand’s Khao Phanom Bencha National Park — around 35/40 minutes drive from Aonang. The five-pooled falls is the main attraction, but there’s also a Buddhist shrine, cafe and impressive ‘Baing tree’ worth checking out. The trek to the falls is beautiful, passing beneath rainforest trees, over uneven rocks and up some pretty steep cliff sides. Your reward is a refreshing dip in the base of the falls. Hiring a car is the easiest way to visit. Entry to the national park is 100 baht per person, plus 30 baht for the car.
